The Buffalo River Chamber of Commerce has created an emergency phone preservation fund to support emergency pay phones in the Buffalo National River park. These emergency phones are located cell phone dead zones. Injured hikers and floaters need these phones to obtain emergency assistance, often in cases severe life-threatening injuries. We estimate that there are at least 12 cases a year where a timely response could save a life or prevent prolonged suffering.
The chamber website features a PayPal button for donations to a special fund to replace and maintain these essential phones.
The NPS defunded these emergency pay phones this fiscal year due to federal funding cutbacks. A small group including Lost Valley Canoe and other concessioners have stepped up to provide stop-gap funding for these phones, but this is not a permanent solution.
