This map is of the headwaters area of the Buffalo National River, often called the "Hailstone". This area is located in the Upper Buffalo Wilderness, an area split between the National Forest Service in the southernmost area, and the National Park Service, at the very beginning of the Buffalo National River Park.
This is a very rugged, pristine area. It is not for the casual tourist. The Hailstone will challenge the most seasoned paddler in the expert class. No one should go it alone here. It is very remote and if you get hurt, chances are the worst will happen. There are no maintained hiking trails, but there are old road beds here and there.
